I have started the germinating process for my ZenFrugal Garden. As I prepared the small greenhouses in which my seeds will sprout and take root, I reflected upon how many of my major projects and goals were initially sown. I was thinking about the timing of my planting these seeds. I chose to do it at night, as it is cooler in Texas at that time. This caused me to reflect, as I was preparing the seed pallets, upon the night my husband and I sowed his initial website greggkanon.com. This site contains his beautiful, expressionist, abstract art. The night corresponded with the Mars Rover Landing as well as his birthday the previous day; we felt it to be a glorious beginning for both projects. I also reminisced about how I picked harvest moons, new moons and full moons to mail many of my academic applications. It is important when one plants new seeds. [Zen]
I followed the instructions on my “garden starters” which called for me to pour warm water upon the pellets contained within the bottom half of the germinator.
I was surprised at how quickly the pellets swelled into size and at how small the seeds were. Using a small glass bowl to hold the seeds, I placed three each upon the individual pellets as instructed. I did this for the cherry tomatoes and the basil gardens.
The next step is to put dirt over the pellets. I decided to steal a little dirt from the actual garden and place it on top of the seeds and pellets.
The next instruction was initially problematic, as they wanted me to spray warm water over the dirt. Oops! I do not have a mister or spray bottle. But I did have a Shout™ Bottle that was almost empty and a new bottle waiting to be used. Save, I merely funneled the remaining Shout™ into the new bottle and rinsed the old bottle repeatedly. Now I have a mister. [Frugal]
The final step is to cover the peat, seeds and soil with the clear plastic germinator top and place the germinators in a warm, bright location [but not direct sunlight]. I want to keep these little “houses” outside so I taped the tops with Magic Lift Off Tape by 3M™.
Upon completion, I realized that my cilantro seeds might be better off starting in germinators too, so I riffled through my recycle bin and pulled out a quiche packaging unit that my local Grocery Store, HEB™, uses to sell a fairly decent quiche. I remembered that I had some potting soil in the garage and decide to use that as my peat bed. I simply followed the instructions again with my makeshift germinator. [Frugal]
My garden seeds have been sown. Now come patience and waiting. Meanwhile, I will concentrate on some other life projects that have been planted in the past few months, they need some weeding.
